Vancouver's Mi'ens Sign to Kill Rock Stars for 'Future Child' LP, Premiere New Video
Math-y Vancouver duo Mi'ens have signed with indie institution Kill Rock Stars. The pair's first album for their new label home is called Future Child, and ahead of the LP's release on September 25, they have premiered the video for the title track.

"Future Child" is an explosive blast of raw riffing and surging drums, blending a fairly straightforward dance beat with skronky, rhythmically complex guitar fireworks. There's just a hint of heavily effected robo vocals in the finale of the intense instrumental jam.

The accompanying video is appropriately cryptic and disorienting, as it mixes overlaid performance footage along with alien sci-fi imagery.

In a statement to Exclaim!, Mi'ens explain:

"Future Child" is our math-y, noisy sonic tribute to neo-futurism, avant-rock movements and the soundscapes of '70s sci-fi films. We built the track around driving loops, adding angular, pointillist guitar in dialogue with the whirring drone of the Moog and the frenetic pace of the drums. I wanted to mix elements of art rock, math rock and experimental influences, in an atmosphere of controlled chaos that's both challenging and inviting. We've added more noisy elements and trippier sounds than on past records, going for denser textures and sonic experimentations within the compositional frameworks. Also on this album, I really wanted to expand beyond our almost purely instrumental sound. The final vocals are a secret message from an ancient alien race, hinting that we should keep a human touch in the machine. With our current dystopian reality, Future Child explores a childhood nostalgia for a near-past utopia: the future world.
